Your washing machine has an “intake hose” that allows water to enter the washing machine. If this hose has a leak, it may lead to a burst of water, which then “hoses down” the whole house. This includes a sensor to be put on the floor which immediately shuts off the valve that extracts the water into the washing machine once it detects a puddle of water!
