MOLD RESISTANT CONSTRUCTION

As a emergency restoration contractor we see all sorts of disaster situations daily. VioBuilds has the knowledge and expertise to provide good design, implementing smart construction process addressing moisture intrusion, mold contamination and promoting good indoor air quality.

With a proactive approach to selecting mold resistant materials and low voc products this provides best prevention practices to address mold and moisture issues down the road.

We are not your ordinary licensed general contractor we specialize in mold mitigation and restoration.  We carry specialized tools like moisture meters and flir cameras that find all the places water travels. Our projects always keep air quality in mind, we keep dust control to minimum with air scrubbing equipment, containment and hepa vacuuming.

Mold. Its living, growing, and, with the exception of mushrooms, not something we’re generally happy about. Mold will grow on almost any organic substance. If water and oxygen are present, mold growth will occur, especially when left to produce over a long period of time in a warm environment. Mold is especially annoying when it invades our homes, businesses and commercial spaces

In the building materials and construction industry, mold problems are not uncommon. In fact, mold has become such a widespread issue that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently declared the month of September, as Mold Awareness Month.

Thanks to advancements in technology, mold resistant building materials and mold prevention strategies are rapidly becoming available in the construction market. Many of these special mold resistant materials are also approved and certified by GREENGUARD Environmental Institute and other organizations that monitor environmental issues and their impact, like the LEED Green Building Rating System.

1. Mold Resistant Wood

Yes, there is such a thing as mold-resistant wood. These wood materials are treated with a fungicide that kill all types of fungus on contact. It will also keep pests – like ants and termites – away. However, do note that some types of mold-resistant wood emit toxic chemicals. We recommend going for mold-resistant wood certified to not release toxic emission in the air for safety.

2. Mold Resistant Insulation

Keep the home fully insulated without making it vulnerable to mold growth. Usually fiberglass is resistant to mold. However, companies are coming out with fiberglass treated with a fungicide. When it comes to choosing the best brand, go for insulation treated with a fungicide that’s registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We recommend digging a little deeper online to see which insulation provides the lowest toxicity.

3. Mold Resistant Dry Wall

Unlike ordinary drywall, a mold-resistant drywall contains fiberglass facing instead of cheaper paper facing. Mold grows on organic materials because the fungus feeds on it. Removing the paper facing eliminates the only organic material in the drywall. While fiberglass facing could still harbor mold, there is a reduced chance of this happening.

4. Mold Resistant Carpet

Even rugs and carpets are not impervious to molds. So going for mold-resistant carpets is a great investment. Unlike ordinary carpets, mold-resistant carpets contain acrylic fibers. Acrylic fibers are more resistant to fungus growth. However, the material isn’t as resilient as ordinary carpet fibers. As such, mold-resistant carpet requires frequent replacement as opposed to ordinary carpets.

5. Mold Resistant Sealant

A mold resistant sealant is a type of protective coating formulated with fungicide and other anti-microbial chemicals. It can be used on various surfaces including wood, stucco and brick. This sealant will resist humid conditions to prevent mold growth.

6. Mold Resistant Paint

Rounding up our list of mold-resistant building materials is mold-resistant paint. Fungal growth usually occurs behind walls. Using a mold-resistant paint should take care of the problem. Do note that if the structure has an existing mold problem, painting it over with mold-resistant paint will not kill the fungus.

In order to maximize its effects, the structure should be 100% mold-free prior to painting. Most brands of mold-resistant paint will retain efficacy for up to five years. Do your research to find out which mold-resistant paint works for your needs and budget.

Whether your home is new or old, there are specific steps you can take to make it resistant to mold. Mold affects indoor air quality and can make homes difficult to sell.  Call today for a quote and on your way to being building mold resistant!

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

What: Indoor air in has high levels of particulates ranging in size from visible dust down to viruses invisible to the naked eye. Sources include: outdoor air pollution, smoking, human skin cells, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, and mold. It can also contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases that are released as materials they are are broken down.

Health effects: Particulates are a lung and nose irritant and may trigger asthma and allergies. VOCs commonly cause burning of the eyes, headaches, and some can lead to cancer.
MOLD

What: Mold is any fungus that grows on food or damp building materials and reproduces by releasing spores that can be inhaled. Mold is often difficult to locate visually but can be detected by a musty odor.

Health Effects: Mold spores can cause respiratory illness, headaches, wheezing and shortness of breath, and flu-like symptoms. Mold increases risk of respiratory disease by 50% and accounts for as much as 20% of asthma. Some molds produce mycotoxins that can lead to severe allergic reactions and fatalities.
